Discover Local History

Myrtle Beach, SC, founded in the early 20th century, transformed from a remote coastal area into a bustling tourist destination. Named after the wax myrtle trees native to the region, its development began with the construction of the first hotel in 1901 and the extension of the railroad, attracting visitors seeking the scenic beauty of the Atlantic Ocean. The establishment of the Myrtle Beach Pavilion in 1949 marked a significant growth period, evolving into a hub of entertainment and recreation. Today, Myrtle Beach is renowned for its vibrant boardwalk, diverse attractions, and beautiful beaches, making it a premier vacation spot on the East Coast.

I am still amazed at the growth and changes in Myrtle Beach from the sleepy town I perceived it to be when my family moved here during high school. In those days, the town basically shut down after Labor Day.    Today, Myrtle Beach is one of the most vibrant beachside communities in the world.   I honestly never saw it coming.

Learn about the rich history of Myrtle Beach by visiting local historical sites and museums. While some museums charge admission, many offer free entry on certain days or have suggested donations. The Horry County Museum is a great place to start.

Discover Barefoot Landing
