Our son Bradley is a huge military history fan, and it is fun to visit the ship with him, hear some history, and gain insights. Typically, we head out early and spend a couple of hours touring the ship in the morning, then take a water taxi or hop in the car for a very quick drive to the waterfront for lunch. Then, it is either back to the ship or shopping and wandering the many waterfront shops.

History of the USS North Carolina

The USS North Carolina (BB-55) is a World War II battleship that played a crucial role in several Pacific Theater battles. Commissioned in 1941, she earned 15 battle stars for her service, which made her the most decorated battleship of the war. Today, the battleship is a museum ship and a National Historic Landmark, offering visitors a chance to explore naval history up close.

After the war, the North Carolina served as a training vessel from 1945 to 1946. It was decommissioned in 1947 and sent to the Inactive Reserve Fleet in New Jersey. In 1958, plans were made to scrap the ship, but a statewide fundraising campaign was launched to save it. This campaign organized counties across North Carolina into a “navy” and awarded the title of “Admiral” to major contributors. Donors of $100 or more received a lifetime pass to visit the ship. Finally, in 1961, the North Carolina was brought to its current home.

The USS North Carolina (BB-55) primarily carried seaplanes for reconnaissance and spotting. The types of planes typically found in North Carolina during World War II were the Vought OS2U Kingfisher and the Curtiss SC Seahawk.

  1. Vought OS2U Kingfisher: This was the most common type of seaplane used in North Carolina. It was a scout and observation aircraft equipped with floats for water landings and takeoffs.
  2. Curtiss SC Seahawk: Later in the war, the Curtiss SC Seahawk replaced the Kingfisher. It was a more advanced seaplane designed for similar reconnaissance and scouting roles.

These seaplanes were launched from the ship using catapults and were recovered by crane after landing in the water.
