The Gullah/Geechee community, descendants of West African enslaved people, have preserved a distinct culture known for its unique language, crafts, music, and cuisine. This celebration provides a platform to experience and appreciate these rich traditions firsthand.
Historically, the Gullah region included the Cape Fear area on North Carolina’s coast and the vicinity around Jacksonville on Florida’s coast. The Gullah people and their language are also referred to as Geechee, a name thought to be derived from the Ogeechee River near Savannah, Georgia.
Gullah is a term initially used to designate the creole dialect of English spoken by the Gullah and Geechee people. Over time, this term has come to represent their creole language and unique ethnic identity as a community.
